It was a terrifying display of the growing violence on the streets of Syria, and for Shadi, the limit of what he could endure. Fearful for his family’s lives, he took them and fled. Their story could have easily ended in tragedy, but after surviving two years as refugees, the Al Dakhil family is now safe and thriving in Canada thanks to the sponsorship of Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish in Ottawa and the Knights of Columbus. Father Gerald Mendoza is a priest of the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan in Northern Alberta and a Knights of Columbus. The wildfires raging across Canada have heavily affected the communities he serves in an isolated part of the country.
